As a medical volunteer in Zanzibar, you will be placed in a teaching hospital where your role will be mainly observational. You will shadow local healthcare providers, gain insight into their daily work and jump in where needed.

Your Accommodation
Your accommodation is included in your package from Sunday night until Saturday morning of your last week, so you can rest assured that you’ll have a comfortable place to call home throughout your journey.
You’ll be staying in shared rooms with other participants, giving you the perfect opportunity to make lifelong friends from around the globe. You’ll be accommodated in single-gender dorm-style rooms, ensuring maximum comfort and privacy.
But that’s not all – we’ve got your meals covered too! You’ll enjoy three delicious meals per day from Monday to Friday, and two meals per day on weekends.

As the island’s primary referral hospital, it offers a wide range of services, from pediatrics and general surgeries to maternity care and mental health services. You’ll have the chance to be part of this vital healthcare hub, learning from local experts and, depending on your experience, even providing direct medical support to people who often face limited access to healthcare.
The hospital also serves as a teaching center for health colleges, making it an ideal place to observe, learn, and contribute. But it’s not without challenges. Like many hospitals in Tanzania, it faces equipment shortages and resource limitations, which directly affect patient care. By joining this program, you’ll not only gain practical experience but also help address these challenges by sharing your skills, donating supplies, and supporting local healthcare efforts.
Your daily tasks will vary depending on your background and qualifications. You might observe surgeries, monitor patients, assist with treatments, or take part in community health outreach programs. It’s an immersive experience that will broaden your understanding of international healthcare and give you the chance to make a meaningful difference.
What You’ll Do

Schedule
From Monday to Friday, you’ll spend at least five hours a day at the hospital. Your day starts around 7:30 AM, arriving at the hospital by 8 AM.
You’ll have a break for lunch, with the option to return to your accommodation or enjoy a packed lunch and continue working until the afternoon.

Once you’re in, expect to help with a variety of tasks. You’ll be working closely with nurses and doctors, assisting in daily duties like taking patient vitals, administering medications, and observing medical procedures. You’ll also have the chance to help out in community health campaigns, giving you even more hands-on experience.
This journey is not just about working; it’s also about respecting the local culture and following the rules that ensure a safe and successful stay. You’ll need to be physically and mentally fit, have travel insurance, and be up to date with vaccines. Modest clothing is advised, and you’ll be expected to follow all local and hospital guidelines.

Requirements to join:
– Participants need to be minimum 18 years old
– Provide your CV, motivation letter, and qualifications
– An established background in an affiliated field of study
– Participants are required to provide a criminal background check (if unable to obtain a criminal background check, you can provide two character reference letters instead)
– Participants are required to have their own travel insurance
– You need to be able to speak and understand English
