Your Internship
Medical Internship in Kenya
This program is geared toward anyone with a healthcare background, whether you’re studying or already working in the field. You’ll be able to contribute based on your skills and knowledge while gaining real-world experience in a unique setting.
You’ll take part in a range of activities at a local medical center or hospital, helping people who often don’t have access to affordable, quality healthcare. Not only will you work closely with professionals, but you’ll also get the chance to observe Kenya’s healthcare system firsthand. It’s a complex mix of public and private providers, with major gaps between urban and rural areas, especially when it comes to infrastructure and access to care.
One of the most impactful opportunities you’ll have is volunteering as a “backpack nurse” in remote areas. Some patients can’t make it to the hospital due to the distance or lack of transportation, so you’ll bring healthcare to them. This means you’ll be walking long distances, offering a rewarding yet challenging experience. After a day’s work, you can unwind by the hotel pool.
Through this program, you’ll grow your medical skills and knowledge while getting a firsthand look at the everyday struggles healthcare professionals face in low-resource areas. By working alongside passionate local staff, you’ll help improve access to healthcare and make a real difference in the community.
Expect to dive into various tasks based on your skills. You’ll be shadowing doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, gaining exposure to both in-patient and outpatient care. From monitoring patients and observing medical procedures to helping with health education in the community, there’s always something to learn and contribute to.
Your involvement in the program can have a real impact on the hospital’s operations. Not only will you bring fresh knowledge and ideas, but if possible, you can donate medical supplies or resources, which would greatly benefit the community and reduce financial burdens on the hospital.
