Get ready for a warm welcome to Zanzibar! Your adventure begins the moment you arrive, with our airport pick-up on Sunday at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport. To ensure a smooth transition, we’ll provide you with all the necessary arrival and contact details when you book your program. The local team will be waiting for you, ready to transfer you to your accommodation where you’ll meet fellow volunteers from around the world.

Your Orientation

On Monday, our experienced coordinator will lead an exciting orientation session. This is your chance to get comfortable with your surroundings and dive into the local culture, while also receiving important health and safety advice.

During the orientation, you’ll receive a comprehensive introduction to your program, accommodations, and the exciting projects that await. Plus, you’ll learn all the do’s and don’ts of local customs, giving you a head start on immersing yourself in the rich and vibrant culture of Zanzibar.

Your Accommodation

Your accommodation is included in your package from Sunday night until Saturday morning of your last week, so you can rest assured that you’ll have a comfortable place to call home throughout your journey.

You’ll be staying in a cozy, traditional house that’s got everything you need—multiple bedrooms, shared bathrooms, a kitchen, and a chill living room perfect for hanging out with the crew. Heads up, rooms are separated by gender. Don’t worry about food, all your meals are covered right at the house.

You’ll be staying in shared rooms with other volunteers, giving you the perfect opportunity to make lifelong friends from around the globe. You’ll be accommodated in single-gender dorm-style rooms, ensuring maximum comfort and privacy.

If you want to have a single room, then this is available at an extra cost. There is limited availability for single rooms so please contact us for this.

But that’s not all – we’ve got your meals covered too! You’ll enjoy three delicious meals per day from Monday to Friday, and two meals per day on weekends. Plus, if you’re a vegetarian, no problem! We can vegetarian meals for you.

Child Care in Zanzibar

Teach and Inspire in Zanzibar! Ready to make a real impact while exploring a new culture? Join us in Zanzibar, where you’ll work with local kindergartens, childcare centers, and primary schools, helping young children (ages 3-6) learn and grow. You’ll assist teachers in daily classroom activities, from sharing basic English, numbers, and colors to creating fun learning experiences like drawing, singing, and games. Your creativity is the key!

Whether you’re placed in a kindergarten, childcare center, or the first two grades of primary school, you’ll work closely with local staff to keep things running smoothly. Groups can range from 10 to 30 kids, so your help will be greatly appreciated, and you’ll even get the chance to lead your own activities. Think of it as a chance to use your imagination while helping kids learn through stories, poems, songs, and games.

English is taught widely in Zanzibar, but rural areas often have fewer opportunities for practice. That’s where you come in—helping kids improve their English skills, which can seriously boost their future opportunities.

There is also the evening teaching program at a local Community Center on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. From 7 PM to 9 PM, you’ll teach groups of students ranging from 4 to 20 years old. Working alongside local teachers, you’ll help prepare and lead lessons, getting even more hands-on teaching experience.

Teachers here are shaping the future, but they need extra hands to keep up with the growing needs of their classrooms. By volunteering, you’ll be providing that much-needed support, helping broaden the horizons of local students who don’t often get the chance to experience international connections. And what better place to do it than Zanzibar, an island full of rich traditions and a mix of cultures?

We partner with primary and secondary schools all over Zanzibar, mostly outside the city, where there’s a big need for teaching help in subjects like English, Math, and Science. You’ll be jumping in by singing songs, playing educational games, and keeping the kids engaged with creative activities like drawing, sports, crafts, and more!

This teaching assistant program is focused on helping kids from ages 5 to 14 (K-7), with school running from 8 AM to noon. If you’re eager for more hands-on experience, you can even talk with the local team to extend your hours. Most days, you’ll spend around 4 hours with the kids, plus time for lesson planning and sometimes even after-school activities.

If you want to go the extra mile, bring along fun stuff like games, colored pencils, books, or even some clothes or toys to donate—these small things make a big impact! We also encourage you to bring pictures or objects from your home country to share in the classroom, creating lessons that expand the kids’ view of the world in a fun and meaningful way.

There is also the Evening Teaching Program. On Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings, you’ll also have the chance to teach at a nearby Community Center from 7 PM to 9 PM. In this program, you’ll work with students of all ages (4 to 20 years old) alongside local teachers, leading lessons and group activities that you help plan.

Get Hands-On with School Renovations in Zanzibar! Looking to make a real difference and get your hands dirty while doing it? Join us in Zanzibar to help renovate village schools and create better learning environments for local students. This project is all about upgrading school facilities in and around Stone Town, giving students a better space to learn and grow. By stepping in, you’ll be giving back to the community in a way that truly matters.

Your work will involve a variety of tasks that contribute to making schools more inviting and functional. Expect to dive into physical labor like laying bricks, carpentry, painting walls, tiling, and even some landscaping or gardening. You’ll also be part of building renovations, which might include painting classrooms, fixing furniture, and repairing equipment.

But it’s not all hard labor—you’ll also get the chance to flex your creative muscles! This project encourages artistic contributions, so if you’ve got ideas for murals, decorations, or ways to improve the school’s vibe, go for it! You’ll work alongside a local coordinator and foreman who will guide you, but there’s plenty of room for your creativity and initiative to shine.

Turtle Conservation in Zanzibar (Nungwi)

Sea turtles have been around for millions of years, but today they’re on the brink of extinction. Now, you can help change that. Join a sea turtle conservation project that’s dedicated to protecting these endangered species. Each year, baby sea turtles are released into the wild, but they need your help to get there safely!

Get involved in hands-on activities like testing water quality, taking care of turtle habitats, and so much more. This isn’t just any experience—it’s a chance to be a part of something bigger with our Turtle Experience & Conservation Program in the stunning Nungwi Lagoon, Zanzibar. Not only will you help protect these amazing creatures, but you’ll also get to explore the tropical paradise of Zanzibar.

You’ll work with local coordinators and fellow volunteers to help care for injured turtles, watch over baby hatchlings, and keep the sanctuary safe and clean. Your role is crucial—every task you complete helps preserve the turtles and their delicate environment.

From beach cleanups to snorkeling around coral reefs, this program blends conservation work with epic island experiences. You’ll also engage with the local community, spreading awareness and educating others about the importance of saving sea turtles.

Whether you’ve worked in conservation before or it’s your first time, everyone is welcome! Our program offers full orientation and support, so you can learn and make an impact from day one.

Sunday: Arrival & Transfer to Nungwi
Upon your arrival at Zanzibar Airport, our friendly team will be waiting to warmly welcome you. You’ll be transferred to our accommodation center in Stone town where you’ll meet your fellow participants. Get ready to embark on an exciting adventure as you receive a comprehensive briefing that sets the stage for the incredible experiences to come.

Monday: Orientation
Begin your day with a delightful breakfast, followed by an orientation session that sets the tone for your journey. Our team will introduce you to the program, offer vital information, and acquaint you with the Nungwi center.

You’ll receive guidance on the dos and don’ts, our code of conduct, and media consent guidelines, along with completing necessary documentation. Embrace the local culture with a basic history lesson & Swahili language lesson. After lunch, embark on a walking tour to familiarize yourself with nearby shops, ATMs, and other key locations.

After the orientation, you will transfer to Nugwi and check in to your accommodation. You will be staying at this accommodation for the duration of your program.

Tuesday to Friday: Conservation Efforts
From Tuesday to Friday, dive headfirst into meaningful conservation efforts. Work closely with our experienced local coordinators as you actively participate in a variety of tasks. Engage in the vital cleaning and maintenance of the turtle basins and hospital, ensuring a pristine environment for the turtles. Collect seaweed from the Indian Ocean, contributing to the ecological balance. Check water quality to guarantee the well-being of these magnificent creatures. Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of sea turtles as you assist with hatching measurements, juvenile measurements, and nest inspections. Every action you take contributes to the preservation and protection of these majestic beings.

Saturday & Sunday: Free Time

In this program, you’ll be able to support the healthcare system in one of Tanzania’s most beautiful and culturally rich towns. Whether you’re conducting health checks, teaching basic first aid, or educating locals on hygiene practices, your role will be vital in helping the community improve its well-being.

Tanzania is working hard to tackle public health challenges, but the country still faces a shortage of healthcare staff, with only about 56% of the workforce it needs. This is where you can step in to make a real difference. By assisting with health campaigns or teaching local school kids about personal hygiene, you’ll be contributing to healthier futures for countless people.

Plus, you’ll be learning about the Tanzanian healthcare system while immersing yourself in a new culture. Whether you’re a medical student, a healthcare professional, or simply someone passionate about making a difference, this program has a role for you.

What You’ll Do

Medical Internship in Zanzibar

Located in the heart of historic Stone Town, this hospital has been serving the people of Zanzibar since 1923. As the island’s primary referral hospital, it offers a wide range of services, from pediatrics and general surgeries to maternity care and mental health services. You’ll have the chance to be part of this vital healthcare hub, learning from local experts and, depending on your experience, even providing direct medical support to people who often face limited access to healthcare.

The hospital also serves as a teaching center for health colleges, making it an ideal place to observe, learn, and contribute. But it’s not without challenges. Like many hospitals in Tanzania, it faces equipment shortages and resource limitations, which directly affect patient care. By joining this program, you’ll not only gain practical experience but also help address these challenges by sharing your skills, donating supplies, and supporting local healthcare efforts.

Your daily tasks will vary depending on your background and qualifications. You might observe surgeries, monitor patients, assist with treatments, or take part in community health outreach programs. What You’ll Do

Schedule

From Monday to Friday, you’ll spend at least five hours a day at the hospital. Your day starts around 7:30 AM, arriving at the hospital by 8 AM.

You’ll have a break for lunch, with the option to return to your accommodation or enjoy a packed lunch and continue working until the afternoon.

Once you’re in, expect to help with a variety of tasks. Start by wandering through the vibrant streets of Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Discover its history and charm, then sail to Prison Island to meet the famous giant tortoises. From there, take a scenic journey along Zanzibar’s east coast, visit spice farms, and immerse yourself in the authentic vibes of Makunduchi village. Swim with dolphins, snorkel near the famous floating restaurant, THE ROCK, and chill on the breathtaking beaches of Nungwi. Top it off with a sunset cruise and an exciting cycling trip that takes you deep into Zanzibar’s natural beauty.

But it’s not just about sightseeing. You’ll also get the chance to make an impact by joining a community project, giving back through activities like education, childcare, or helping with construction. Your adventure is more than just travel—it’s a way to experience Zanzibar’s culture, landscapes, and people while leaving a positive mark.

From the moment you land at Zanzibar Airport or Ferry Port, our local guide will be there to welcome you and help you settle into your hotel. After an orientation on what’s in store, you’ll kickstart your adventure with an early morning tour of Stone Town’s winding streets and stunning ocean views. Then, hop on a traditional wooden boat and head to Prison Island for an up-close encounter with giant tortoises before heading back to your hotel for some well-earned rest.

Day three is all about Zanzibar’s famous spices. Visit rural spice farms, where you’ll learn the secrets behind the island’s aromatic exports and enjoy a delicious homemade spice-infused lunch.

By the end of your two-week journey, you’ll have seen the very best of Zanzibar, from its jaw-dropping beaches to its incredible culture. You’ll also leave knowing you’ve contributed to something bigger through meaningful volunteer work, all while exploring this eco-friendly island in a way that stays true to our commitment to sustainability.

Week 1

Day 1: Sunday
Our coordinator will meet you at the airport and transport you to our Stone Town accommodation, where you will spend the first two nights.

Day 2: Monday
The day begins with a full orientation and overview of the road trip. Thereafter, you will be heading for a tour of the historic Stone Town followed by a tour of Prison Island.

Day 3: Tuesday
We depart to “Makunduchi ”, the South -Coast of Stone Town, via a Spice farm, where you will learn about herbs and spices. The evening will be finished with a bonfire, dinner, and a briefing.

Day 4: Wednesday
It will be an early morning rise today for you as you will join an early morning dolphin tour. Then visit the very first Mosque ever built in Kizimkazi village, and thereafter visit Makunduchi Village for a cultural experience.

Day 5: Thursday
You will travel to Jozani Forest and Mangrove Forest, then to Ngunga Cave and Paje Beach for a packed lunch before returning to Makunduchi.

Today you will be helping renovate a local school followed by evening activities

Today is a day for chilling and Snorkeling close to the reef by Upendo Beach, opposite The Rock restaurant.

Day 8: Sunday
Today you will travel to Matemwe and visit and indulge in the culture at Matemwe Village, where you can relax all afternoon and take a walk on the beach.

Today you will be at Mnemba Atoll, where you will be snorkeling and learning about marine life.

Day 10: Tuesday
We start the day by traveling to “Nungwi” and visiting the Natural Aquarium for Sea Turtles, where you will help the staff out with some of the daily activities of the sea turtles.

Today will be your last day of the Discover Zanzibar Road Trip. You will start the day today with a cycling tour through Nungwi, and in the evening you will head on a Sunset Cruise on a traditional Wooden boat with snacks, followed by a BBQ on the beach.

Week 3

Day 15: Sunday
Today we head back to our Stone Town accommodation, where you take a rest after much traveling.

In the evening, we will conduct a briefing for the coming week of the community engagement project.

Day 16 – 20: Monday to Friday
Community Engagement project

After an adventure of two weeks, you will join a community project where you can contribute to a social project and give back to the community. You can join teaching, childcare, and construction and renovation projects.

Day 21: Saturday
Head to the airport for your departure.
